paste - merge lines of files side by side (GNU coreutils)

paste [-s] [-d LIST] [FILE]...

Options you will use

-d, --delimiters=LIST
use the characters of LIST in turn instead of TAB
-s, --serial
one file at a time: all its lines on one line
-
standard input; each - takes the next line, so paste - - joins lines in pairs

Examples

$ ... | paste - -

two lines become one: name and value side by side

$ paste -d, a.txt b.txt

two files as CSV columns
